Visit Albay in the summer month of April and rediscover the province’s annual celebration of culture, cuisine and craft: Magayon Festival. The festival was originally conceived to relive the legend of Mt. Mayon whose name comes from ‘Daragang Magayon’ or beautiful maiden in the Bikol language.
Today, the Magayon Festival is a celebration of all things beautiful in Albay: the exuberant spirit, zest for life, artistry and kaleidoscopic talents of the Albayano; the matchless picturesque Albay countryside and its colorful history steeped in age-old traditions and legends.
With the myriad wonders, both the famous and the undiscovered, that Albay has to offer, it is little wonder that a once week-long festival is now celebrated for an entire month with a wide range of activities, events, sights and sounds line up for everyone to enjoy.
Climbing up to the summit of the Philippines’s most active volcano is truly an experience of a lifetime. Climbing up to the level close to the summit or an area commonly referred to as the knife’s edge is for the intermediate-expert climber or for one who is very fit. It normally takes two days and one night to reach the summit and it is essential that one have a competent and knowledgeable local guide.
