Ancient Ibalong epic relived in colorful street parade

Ibalong, the ancient folk-epic of Bicol, came to life in a dazzling and colorful annual street presentation held last Saturday, August 20, 2011 along Legazpi’s main thoroughfares. Contingents from all over Bicol decked in vibrant, multi-hued costumes creatively designed and mostly using native materials danced to catchy drum beats and chants as they portrayed scenes from the Ibalong epic-fragment.

The street presentation commenced at the Peñaranda Park and wound its way through thousands of spectators lining Rizal Street to Quezon Avenue and through Landco Business Park before culminating in the exhibition contest at the Legazpi Grand Central Terminal.

Bicol University topped all the other contingents and was chosen as Grand Champion. It also clinched several awards including Best in Costume and Props, Best in Music and Sound and Best in Exhibition. Meanwhile, Oro Site High School grabbed the Best in Street Dance award.

It was a spectacular street presentation to cap off this year’s Ibalong Festival, the first ever held in the month of August.
