The Embarcadero is Legazpi’s newest lifestyle hub, commercial and entertainment center offering retail shops, restaurants and cafes, bars, arcade, bowling alleys, promenade, Celebration Plaza and a lighthouse. Although more than half of the entire complex is still under construction, the Embarcadero has already made its mark in the Legazpi cityscape as a popular destination for both locals and tourists.

As of February 2010, the Embarcadero is home to several locators, a mix of local and national brand names, such as Bigg’s Diner (Bicol’s homegrown fastfood chain), La Mia Tazza (a Legazpi-based chain of coffee shops), Gerry’s Grill, Padi’s Point, Mang Inasal, Tapa King, Kitaro, Harbor Wok Restaurant, Plains and Prints, Mango, Cinderella, Mercury Drug, and SLTCFI BPO Incubation Center. More tenants are expected to set up shop soon. The Embarcadero is also a jump-off point to Misibis Bay Raintree, a luxury resort hotel in nearby Cagraray Island.

The Embarcadero has also pioneered eco-friendly transportation in the Bicol Region by introducing Electric Jeepneys or e-Jeeps. These e-Jeeps carry visitors to and from Embarcadero free of charge. There are currently four e-Jeeps in operation, with plans to add more in the future. With the e-Jeeps roaming around the city, it is very easy to get to Embarcadero from the Legazpi Port District.

The lifestyle hub and IT Park is part of a master-planned development that will cover almost 200 hectares in the city’s southern barangays stretching from the shapely Kapuntukan Hill. A new coastal road called Legazpi Boulevard is currently under construction, extending from the foot of the hill to Brgy. Lamba.

The story of Albay Pilinut Candy begins with the family patriarch, Don Antonio M. Regidor II from Malaga, Spain. An adventurous traveler, Don Antonio sailed back and forth from Spain to the Philippines aboard the family ship before setting down in Bicol. He brought with him his mother’s heirloom candy recipes.

Seeing the abundance of pili nut trees in Bicol, he used the native nuts to create mazapan, yemas, sugar coated, caramelitos, pastillas and pili coated with sesame seeds with excellent results. He then decided to establish the first pili nut candy factory in Bicol called Central Pilinut Candy along with a friend, a former Moroccan legionnaire.

Don Antonio married the late Purificacion Macapugay, and they had five children namely Angelita, Estelita, Erlinda, Antonio and Leticia. In 1975, he turned over the active supervision of candy factory to his daughter Erlinda Regidor-Diaz, who renamed it as Albay Central Pilinut Candy.

In 1985, his granddaughters Rosemarie, Angelica, Elizabeth and Agnes took over, upon the death of their mother, Erlinda. Then in 1996 (up to the present), the Candy Factory became the New Albay Central Pilinut Candy, under the management of Rosemarie Diaz-Battung. Don Antonio Regidor was the recipient of the 1971 Panday Pira Award of Excellence. He died on October 16, 1980 at the age of 89.

The Embarcadero, one of the most anticipated developments in the city of Legazpi, “soft” opened last July 18, 2009 with two locators opening its doors to the public. The Embarcadero is a major waterfront development located at the harbor area of Legazpi City adjacent to the alluring Kapuntukan Hill (also called Sleeping Lion Hill).

Embarcadero at Night | Photo by Marius Patrick Encinareal

The Embarcadero will offer a mix of retail, restaurants, markets, and shops. There will also be a civic space and an imposing 30-meter tall lighthouse that could become one of the iconic symbols of Legazpi. Aside from the 12,000 square meter commercial area, there will also be a future 14,500 square meter waterfront hotel, spa and convention center and a 15,477 square meter Information Technology (IT) Park, envisioned to provide thousands of BPO jobs for Bicolanos.

Embarcadero will be a waterfront promenade, with theatrical lighting and performance spaces creating a lively, family friendly environment during the day and at night. Visitors to Embarcadero will enjoy a stunning view of the mighty Mayon Volcano and the cityscape to the north and the Albay Gulf to the east.

This new development is a welcome addition to the city’s growing list of shopping and entertainment destinations including LCC Mall, Landco Pacific Mall, A. Bichara Silverscreens, and the soon to open LKY Lifestyle Hub adjacent to the new integrated terminal. The opening of the IT park is also highly-anticipated, especially by Bicolanos looking for jobs.

For Embarcadero’s soft opening, two restaurant tenants namely Kitaro and Tapa King started operations. The SLTCFI BPO Incubation Center also opened its new office. Meanwhile, the newest branch of Bigg’s Diner, Bicol’s homegrown chain of restaurants will open on July 24. Other confirmed tenants are Gerry’s Grill, Padi’s Point, Mang Inasal, Harbour Wok, La Mia Tazza Cafe, Pancit Malabon Express, F2M, Giordano, Cinderella, Adidas, Lots’a Pizza, Casa Nostra Bar and Restaurant, Plains and Prints, Pacific Dive, Chill Bar, Mercury Drug, Bowling Lanes, Dampa-style restaurants and more.

Construction work is still ongoing at the Embarcadero and it is expected to be completed later this year. The grand opening of Embarcadero is reportedly slated later this year.

All roads lead to Albay this month of April as the province welcomes friends and guests to the annual celebration. Magayon Festival is originally inspired by the ‘Legend of Daragang Magayon‘, the lovely but tragic story of how the majestic Mayon Volcano came to be.

Today, Magayon Festival has evolved to become a celebration of the rich culture and warm hospitality of the Albayanos as well as a showcase of the best that Albay can offer – fascinating destinations capped by the captivating Mayon Volcano, delightful cuisine, unique Bicolano products, and many more.

This is the perfect time to explore Albay’s well-known destinations and discover its hidden treasures. There is indeed so much more in Albay than its famed Mayon.
Among the hotels one can find in Albay, one place stands out for its pedigree. The Hotel Venezia is one of the hotels managed by the well-known Discovery group, which also operates the Discovery Suites in Metro Manila, Discovery Country Suites in Tagaytay, Discovery Shores in Boracay and soon Discovery Bay in Misibis, also in the Bicol region. Although Hotel Venezia is quite small compared with its sister hotels, it exhibits “the same level of style and service,” says Ian Mayer Varona, its resident manager.

What distinguishes this hotel from others in Legazpi City, as well, is its personalized style of service, uncommon in the province. For those who have experienced the other Discovery properties, it will be obvious that the well-known Discovery brand of hospitality is very much alive in this cozy hotel.

The rooms are simple yet luxuriously comfortable and well-maintained, and the hotel staff is friendly and accommodating. The level of service is certainly superior, and the food in its restaurant, Caffe San Marco, features cuisine inspired by Italian flavors and crafted from the freshest and most seasonal ingredients. Varona is particularly proud of its desserts. Caffe San Marco seats 40 to 60 persons, including outdoor dining, and is open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Located just two minutes by car from the Legazpi City airport, Hotel Venezia is ensconced within the gated community of Renaissance Gardens in Washington Drive. Like almost any place in the city, it is just a few minutes away from commercial areas, government offices, banks, churches and parks.

With its restful ambiance, Hotel Venezia is the ideal home away from home when in Legazpi. It offers a range of accommodations — 15 standard rooms, 23 junior suites and two one-bedroom suites. Some rooms have king-size beds and some have double beds. Some also have verandas. Each are equipped with standard amenities such as bathrobes and slippers, coffee/tea making facilities, complimentary buffet breakfast, complimentary local newspaper, hair dryer, in room safe, iron and ironing board upon request, LCD television with cable channels, mini bar, office desk and twice daily housekeeping service.

Before you turn in for the night, you will find that your robe and slippers have been laid out for you on the turned-down bed, and a little refreshment thoughfully placed on your coffee table. One night you might get a few oatmeal cookies, or perhaps a moist carrot cake, and as you chew on them you could amuse yourself with the nice little note that accompanied the snack.

The hotel also offers business services, a business center, WiFi access in public spaces, audio visual equipment and computer rental. It has three function rooms ideal for business functions or events like weddings and parties. The hotel’s meeting facilities and equipment are good for 10 to 350 persons for meetings and 500 persons for cocktails.

Those seeking recreation may opt to use the hotel’s swimming pool and tennis court. Twenty-four hour reflexology services are also available.

To those who would like to explore the province, the hotel arranges city tours, which include Mayon skyline, handicraft, Albay Park and Wildlife, Lignon Hill, churches, Cagsawa ruins and Kapuntukan Hill; adventure tours including whale shark interaction, manta ray interaction, wakeboarding, caves, waterfalls and an 18-hole golf course experience; as well as educational tours, which include visits to a museum, the Japanese tunnel in Lignon Hill and a pili nut factory.

Discovering Bicol is now far easier with the Hotel Venezia.
