Gayon Bicol – Festival Showdown sa Magayon: Photos and Results

The Gayon Bicol: Festival Showdown sa Magayon is one of the most colorful and vibrant highlights of Magayon Festival 2012. In this event, Bicol’s best and most colorful festival converge in Albay to compete for several awards.

This year’s contingents include Tig-aw Festival of Tigaon, Camarines Sur; Sosogon Festival of Sorsogon City; Sunflower Festival of Ligao City; Pinyasan Festival of Daet; Cimarrones Festival of Pili, Camarines Sur; Ibalong Festival of Legazpi City, and Unod Festival of Castilla, Sorsogon.

After the presentation on the street and in front of the judges, the following were announced as winners:

Champion – Unod Festival, Castilla, Sorsogon
2nd Prize – Pinyasan Festival, Daet, Camarines Norte
3rd Prize – Cimarrones Festival, Pili, Camarines Sur
Best in Costume – Unod Festival, Castilla, Sorsogon
Best in Moving Choreography – Unod Festival, Castilla, Sorsogon

The festival expresses the thanksgiving of the people of Castilla, a celebration of the bountiful harvest of root crops (‘unod’ in Bicol) of the town and the value of being industrious people.

Climbing Up to Mayon’s Base Camp

Climbing up to the summit of the Philippines’s most active volcano is truly an experience of a lifetime. Climbing up to the level close to the summit or an area commonly referred to as the knife’s edge is for the intermediate-expert climber or for one who is very fit. It normally takes two days and one night to reach the summit and it is essential that one have a competent and knowledgeable local guide.
