History

Buhawi Hills and Binanderahan Hill were traditionally used by local residents, primarily for gathering resources and accessing other parts of the Panganiran Range. These hills remained relatively unknown to outsiders for many years. However, in recent times, their stunning natural beauty and proximity to Legazpi City have led to a surge in popularity among hikers and outdoor enthusiasts. The word “Buhawi” means “whirlwind” in Filipino, perhaps referring to the strong winds that can sometimes blow over the hills, adding to the adventurous allure of the trek. Meanwhile, “binanderahan” translates to “decorated or adroned with a flag”.

How to Get There

Here’s how to get to Buhawi Hills from Legazpi City

  1. Jeepney to Ligao City: At Legazpi City, find and board a jeepney bound for Ligao City. Disembark at the Ligao City terminal.
  2. Jeepney to Pio Duran: At the same terminal, locate a jeepney headed to Pio Duran, Albay. Inform the driver that you need to get off at Barangay Caratagan’s barangay (Brgy.) hall.
  3. Registration at Barangay Hall: Upon arrival at Brgy. Caratagan, register at the barangay hall. You will be assigned a local guide here. It’s recommended to negotiate the guide’s fee beforehand.
  4. Habal-habal to Jump-off Point: Hire a habal-habal (motorcycle taxi) to take you from Brgy. Caratagan to the Buhawi Hills jump-off point, the start of your hike.
  5. Optional Walking Route: If you prefer a more challenging route, you can walk from Brgy. Caratagan to the jump-off point. However, be aware that this walk takes approximately 1.5 hours.
