Overview

Nestled approximately 3 kilometers west of the bustling downtown port area in Legazpi City, Albay, Philippines, Ligñon Hill serves as a magnificent natural beacon. Towering at about 512 feet (156 meters), this ancient cinder cone provides unparalleled views, with the majestic Mayon Volcano to its northwest and sweeping vistas of Legazpi City and the Albay Gulf to its east and south. After years under the stewardship of the Legazpi city government, the provincial government of Albay has taken over the management of Ligñon Hill. Currently, the hill is undergoing redevelopment to enhance its offerings and facilities. Despite this, it remains open to the public. However, visitors should note that some attractions may not be available during the redevelopment phase. Ligñon Hill continues to be a symbol of natural preservation and an emblem of the city’s and province’s commitment to showcasing its environmental and cultural heritage.

History of Ligñon Hill Nature Park

Ligñon Hill, a hill steeped in science and history, offers a fascinating glimpse into the region’s volcanic origins. Located near the base of the mighty Mayon Volcano, about 12 kilometers south-southeast from its summit, this geological gem is composed primarily of dolerite and basaltic volcanic rocks. The hill serves a dual purpose:

Firstly, its strategic location made it the ideal site for the Mayon Volcano Observatory. Established in 1989, the observatory acts as the central monitoring station for the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), playing a crucial role in understanding and monitoring Mayon’s activity. The addition of the Lignon Hill Observatory in 1989 further solidifies its scientific value. Situated on Mayon’s southeast slope, this vital observatory doubles as a Science House, educating visitors on volcanic activity and the region’s dynamic geological past.

Secondly, Ligñon Hill has been transformed into a vibrant nature park. A significant renovation in 2006 opened the door to private development, adding visitor-friendly amenities like a viewing deck with coin-operated telescopes, a landscaped promenade, restaurants, and souvenir shops. The park also boasts adventurous features like a zipline and a preserved 50-foot tunnel built by the Japanese during World War II. Easily accessible thanks to a spiral uphill road from Binitayan Road, the park is a popular destination.
