Overview
St. Michael the Archangel Parish Church, known as Oas Church, is a historic Roman Catholic church located in the heart of Oas, Albay (Philippines). With a history dating back to the 16th century, the church stands as a testament to the town’s deep Catholic roots and the resilience of its people through centuries of natural disasters and renovations.
The church complex follows the typical layout of Franciscan churches in the region: a main church structure with a bell tower adjoining on one side, connected by a storage dome and grotto, and a parish house on the other. The present church, while modernized, preserves its historic elements, creating a fascinating blend of old and new.

History
The history of St. Michael the Archangel Church is deeply intertwined with the evolution of Oas itself. Franciscan missionaries arrived in 1569, beginning evangelization efforts under Fray Baltazar de los Reyes y Miranda (OFM), who established a modest chapel. This dedication to St. Michael the Archangel laid the foundation for the church we see today, with the saint becoming the town’s cherished patron.
In 1586, Fray Geronimo de Aguilar (OFM) built a wooden church, and Oas officially became a parish in 1605. Over the next two centuries, various Franciscan friars oversaw the gradual transition from wood to a sturdier stone church and rectory. This period wasn’t without challenges – the 19th century saw the structures ravaged by natural disasters, including fires, a powerful earthquake, and destructive typhoons.
However, the Oaseños’ unwavering spirit fueled continuous rebuilding and repair efforts. Their dedication culminated in the 1997 renovation, where the church was modernized while carefully preserving historical gems like the striking brick walls and the steadfast bell tower.
